Ms. Juliet Goldsmith, is the Plant Health Specialist with the Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Agency (CAHFSA), the Regional Plant Protection Organization for the Caribbean Region. Juliet has over 20 years of experience working in the agricultural sector, including pest management, plant pest diagnostics and pesticide life cycle management. As the Executive Secretary for CAHFSA, she coordinates regional phytosanitary activities while engaging extensively with the Secretariat of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) and other Regional Plant Protection Organizations. Juliet serves as CAHFSA’s official contact point with the WTO SPS Committee and is the main delegate to the meetings of the SPS committee. She is currently one of the STDF Developing Country Experts. Juliet is an Entomologist and Pest Risk Analyst.She will be sharing her experience regarding plant health at the regional level.
Dr. Alemayehu Mekonnen Anbessie, is currently Advisor for office of the State Minister for Livestock sector Development at the Ministry of Agriculture in Ethiopia. Until recently a few weeks ago used to be Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) and Permanent Delegate of Ethiopia to the World Organization for Animal Heath (OIE). Dr. Anbessie has over 30 years of experience in Animal Health Regulatory services which includes disease prevention and control, quarantine inspection and certification of live animals, animal products, and animal by-products for export. Also, actively worked as national co-coordinator and trainer in national and regional (East Africa) training courses on animal health SPS Measures. He is also the author of several articles. Dr. Anbessie is thoroughly familiar with issues of SPS and animal health certification related activities and Marketing which includes activities related to compliance to market requirements for trade in livestock commodities food safety quality control; quality assuranc
Mr. Steve Wearne, is one of the three vice-chairpersons of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, the global food safety and quality standards setting body. Steve has a career spanning over 30 years in food regulation in the UK government, including over 20 years in the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA). During this time, he has worked on issues across food policy and science, from additives and sweeteners, to veterinary residues and other contaminants in food, to regulatory practice. His roles have included Director of Policy & Science from 2013 to 2019 and, most recently, Director of Global Affairs. This role incorporates Steve’s position as Codex Vice-Chair. Steve is a scientist by training, with a degree in biochemistry and a period of postgraduate research in molecular biology. He will be sharing his experience mainly in his capacity as Vice-chair of Codex, in order words about food safety at a global level.
